What is written and recorded here is “gold” for any beginning/intermediate blues guitarist. You will learn interesting comping patterns and fascinating chord substitutions to make your blues rhythm playing much more interesting than the standard I7-IV7-V7. However, at only 16 pages and less than 30 minutes of playing on the accompanying CD, it is fair to say that this package is parsimonious (to be kind). Double the length would be fair for the price. So, what you get is great but not nearly enough. “All Blues for Jazz Guitar” by Jim Ferguson covers similar ground but in far more depth and detail.
Customer Review: Good basic blues and more
Not much here in terms of pages, but this package consists of a nice 48 bar solo plus 15 additional riffs. As the reviewer of the rhythm blues book noted, it can be difficult to work up to full speed, but with the help of some slowdown software (Slowgold, etc.) you can work your way up.
For me, the 48 bar solo looked at first to be some fairly typical blues riffs, but once I got into it I found much more. Some positions and riffs that were unusual (for me), and many nuances that can be found from playing along with this slowly. Robben uses a lot of 1/4 step bends, hammers and vibrato that are not fully notated in the tab but can be gleaned from the recording.
The extra 15 riffs are a mixed bag. Some of these are more in a jazz vein and might be more difficult for someone other than an advanced player to apply. But I highly recommend this for the 48 bars worth of riffs. Take the time to memorize it and work it up to speed.
